This is a very ancient sacred amulet. The image of a protective shore, the image of a mother who gives birth, the image of the earth. In every Ukrainian house there were motanas.

According to the beliefs of the people, the doll carried the spirit of ancestors and passed it on from generation to generation. Ukrainians respected the motanka and believed that it brings the owner wealth and good fortune.
Taking into account all the hidden sacred meanings, motanka is connected in the consciousness of the Slavs with being and non-being, with past generations and the connection between them.
All agrarian holidays are connected with motanka: they do it on Kolodiy, on Ivan Kupala. To this day, the motanka has a sacred meaning.

In a difficult period for our country and the whole world, Motanka was reflected in modern art. The image of the keeper of the hearth was complemented by modern automatic weapons.
What is a motanka?
The author of the sculpture "To the battle!" Iryna Gubanova produced this work in 2022, in the first months of the full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine by enemy troops.

Being all this time in the city of Dnipro, helping the displaced, the army, the wounded and those affected by the aggression of the terrorist country, the idea of creating a sacred motanka, which took up modern weapons to protect the native land, crystallized. This idea was liked by many soldiers who are on the front lines, volunteers, people who, with their work and creativity, help bring our Victory closer! One joint Victory for all Ukrainians and for the entire civilized world.

Work "To the fight!" Iryna Gubanova is presented in the Treasury of the National Historical Museum of Ukraine, located in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
